GEO in plain language
Generative engine optimization, or GEO, is the practice of improving web content so that AI search and answer systems can discover it, understand what it says, retrieve the relevant passage, and cite it when useful.
The goal is not to manipulate a model or guarantee a recommendation. It is to reduce ambiguity. A technically accessible page with clear definitions, verifiable claims, consistent brand information, and focused answers gives retrieval systems better material to work with.
How GEO relates to SEO
GEO and search engine optimization share the same foundation: pages must be crawlable, indexable, useful, and trustworthy. SEO commonly focuses on rankings and clicks from a search results page. GEO adds questions about whether a brand appears in generated answers, which source pages are cited, and whether AI-referred visits contribute to business outcomes.
This makes GEO an extension of good web publishing rather than a replacement for SEO.
The main parts of GEO
Technical accessibility
Important content should exist in the initial HTML, use semantic headings, return correct HTTP status codes, and be reachable through internal links and a sitemap.
Clear information
Pages should answer specific questions directly. Definitions and important claims should make sense when a short passage is quoted outside the page.
Entity consistency
A brand name, website, company description, authors, products, and official profiles should use consistent information. Structured data can express these relationships, but it must match visible and verifiable content.
Evidence and authority
Useful sources, dates, authorship, real examples, and transparent measurement methods make a page easier to evaluate. Fabricated reviews, ratings, and statistics undermine that trust.
Measurement
Teams can monitor brand mentions, cited pages, prompt-level visibility, AI referral traffic, and downstream outcomes. Measurement should distinguish confirmed evidence from estimates.
What GEO cannot promise
Every AI search provider controls its own crawling, indexing, retrieval, and answer-generation systems. Allowing a crawler or adding schema does not guarantee that a page will appear in an answer. GEO improves the quality and accessibility of the available evidence; the final selection remains with each platform.
